Umbrella originated from the Warring States period, it was originally made of wood by craftsman Luban. At that time, considering of it's not convenient to produce and carry, Luban's wife Yun's made a transformation. With the invention of papermaking，the oiled paper umbrella generated. As it's lightweight, durable and easy to be carried, therefore, the oiled paper umbrella soon spread out. When the Prime minister of Song Dynasty Ma TingLuan (a son-in-law of Zhang's in Jialu village), he brought an oiled paper umbrella from the national capital. Since then, the clever Jialu people unceasingly improved the craft and passed on from generation to generation.
　　A small Jialu umbrella looks plain, light and simple, but it's not easy to manufacture a top-grade umbrella, first we have to choose good material, for instance: bamboo, paper, tung oil, silk and etc. The most essential material is the bamboo. The umbrella skeleton is hewed with the bamboo. The bamboo owns hard quality and flexibility, not easy to break off; originates

directly from the nature, elegant and environment-friendly, the only shortage of it is easy to be destroyed by insects, and to get moldy and spoil.Therefore, the bamboo umbrella-stand has to be carried on the strict high temperature steam boiling, the sun exposure and the roasting. Next is to install the key, mount the paper, draw the flower, and oil the surface, pass the thread, knot top, nearly thirty procedures. painting of beautiful women, beautiful scenery and so on. Therefore the umbrella not only becomes elegant and practical daily necessities, but also becomes an art of works, which owns the appreciation value. There are varies kinds of umbrellas, for instance: brightly colored umbrellas, plain black or brightly transparent umbrella.
　　The Jialu umbrella has a long history; it was firstly recorded in the chapter “the goods”,“Wuyuan county annals” in the year of 1694. At that time, besides Jialu village, Zhongyun town, Jiangwan town and the Wuyuan county also produce the umbrella, In 1943, the production of the total county reached to more than 252,000 pieces, of which over 176,000 pieces umbrellas were exported. In particular, "Jialu umbrella" enjoys high popularity at home and abroad, it is displayed in the four provinces (Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi) specialty joint exhibition in 1936 and in Jiangxi Province agricultural and industrial products exhibition in 1943; and it was also elected to the International Exposition and won the Silver medal.
